Back Pain
Back pain is a very common ailment and unfortunately can affect us all. Most people will experience some form of back pain in their life. It is often caused by injury such as a car accident, sports, or improper lifting. Other times it's the result of poor habits such as slouching or incorrect posture while sitting or bending. Pregnant women often experience back pain as their body adjusts to the growing child. Back pain can usually be managed and controlled with proper care and attention.
The first steps to relieving back pain, is to first identify the source and what kind of pain it is. If you are among the vast majority of back pain sufferers, you are most likely experiencing a mechanical problem. This means that the source of your symptoms is likely coming from one of the spine's physical components: the bones, the discs or the joints. A physiotherapist can help restore the back to optimal functional ability by providing a routine that can include stretching exercises, a strengthening program, therapeutic massage and other forms of treatment such as joint mobilization and manipulation. They will also teach techniques to improve posture and reduce the risk of further back problems. Although there are often no quick fix solutions to back problems a physiotherapist can help to reduce the pain and improve the overall function and health of the back.

Neck Pain
Neck pain is a very common ailment and unfortunately can affect us all. A large percentage of Canadians will suffer from neck pain over the course of their life. Neck pain can usually be managed and controlled with proper care and attention.
The first step to relieving neck pain is to identify the source and what kind of pain it is. If you are among the vast majority of neck pain sufferers, you are most likely experiencing a mechanical problem. This means that the source of your symptoms is likely coming from one of the neck's physical components: the bones, the discs or the joints. The good news is that mechanical neck pain almost always falls into one of three common patterns of pain. Once you recognize your typical pattern, you can take steps to quickly reduce the pain.

Acupuncture
Often when the body experiences pain, the autonomic nervous system can become out of sync with the body in terms of the amount of "pain signals" the body is sending to the brain. Acupuncture is a treatment modality used to reduce pain and restore normal function in the body and involves insertion of extremely fine needles into specific points on the body. These points have been shown to correspond to specific points in your body's nervous system. The stimulation of these nervous system points results in pain relief, general relaxation, and restoration of the nervous system's normal state.
The main benefits of acupuncture are:
-
pain control
-
autonomic nervous system
-
normalization
-
reduction of inflammation
-
tissue regeneration and healing
Acupuncture is an excellent treatment option for anyone suffering from pain whether chronic in nature or acute onset. People experiencing pain from many musculoskeletal conditions including headaches, neck and back pain, nerve pain, disc herniation, tendonitis, and arthritis can obtain relief from acupuncture treatments. Many people find the treatments relaxing and experience minimal discomfort.
Our Physiotherapists can provide an assessment of your condition to determine the best treatment approach for you.

Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Therapy
Temporomandibular Dysfunction, or TMJD, is the acute or chronic inflammation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). We have two TMJ's, which connect the lower jaw to the skull. You can feel the joints moving when you place your fingers just in front of your ear lobes and open and close your mouth. The resultant dysfunction can lead to significant pain, clicking or grating sensations and restricted lower jaw movement. The cause of TMJD is unclear. Dentists believe the symptoms arise from problems with muscles of the jaw, or parts of the joint itself. Injury to the jaw, a heavy blow or neck strain can cause TMJD. Other possible causes are: grinding/ clenching of the jaw, dislocation of the disc (soft cushion between the ball and socket of the TMJ), presence of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis in the TMJ or stress, which can cause an overload of the jaw muscles and subsequent pain.
CBI Health Group offers specific TMJ therapy program to help patients deal these issues. When being treated for TMJD you may see several healthcare professionals, including Dentists, Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons, Physiotherapists, Psychologists or Neurologists. Physiotherapy will involve several different treatment techniques as recommended by your physiotherapists.
