What we treat
Each year, 18,000 Canadians who’ve suffered a car accident choose CBI to treat:
Whiplash, Broken Bones, Neck, Shoulder and Back Pain, Sprains, Strains, Seatbelt Injuries, TMJ or Jaw Pain, Concussion, Dizziness, Mobility Challenges, Driving Anxiety and more.
As of April 1, 2019 you're covered for more care. CBI is proud to offer all of the services now covered by ICBC Accident Benefits. These benefits are available for all British Columbians injured in a crash, whether or not you caused it.
The after effects of a car accident can be both mentally and physically challenging. Injuries can be evident right away (broken bones, sprains, strains), yet other times they may show up later -- that’s why it’s important to be assessed by a physiotherapist right away.
Our physiotherapists can assist you with any number of symptoms you might be experiencing and will work closely with you to reduce pain and promote healing so you can return to your daily activities sooner.
If your range of movement has been compromised due to the effects of a car accident injury, we can help.
A personalized Kinesiology program can help with range of motion activities, health education (sleeping, eating, pain control, and exercise), proper body mechanics, conditioning for return to work, home activities, and sports.
Sometimes injuries from car accidents can interfere with a person’s ability to do the things that are important to them. That’s where Occupational Therapy (OT) comes in.
OT’s help people to solve the problems that interfere with their ability to do the things that are important to them such as self-care, being productive (work, school, community) and leisure activities. CBI OTs can help with: chronic pain, mental health, concussion, return to work and return to function, physical and brain rehabilitation.
You do not have to have hit your head during your car accident to have a concussion. Sometimes, the brain undergoes an acceleration/deceleration movement e.g., whiplash or a rotational force (side to side) without direct external trauma and this can result in a concussion.
The effects of a concussion can include headaches and dizziness, poor memory, loss of balance, slurred speech, emotional symptoms (e.g., feelings of irritability, sadness or depression) and other function-limiting symptoms.
It’s smart to seek concussion treatment. At CBI Health Group, you'll find an interdisciplinary team of healthcare providers who work with you to complete a thorough assessment and develop a treatment program that’s right for your specific needs, so you can get back to doing the things you love sooner.
If you’re suffering from dizziness, vertigo or imbalance as a result of a head injury sustained during your car accident and you’re searching for relief, you may benefit from vestibular rehabilitation.
Using evidence-based assessment and treatment techniques, our knowledgeable and experienced healthcare providers can help you return to your normal activities sooner.
If you are noticing symptoms of stress, anxiety or depression that affect your ability to cope, sleep, drive or function after your car accident, many of our locations also offer mental health professionals to support you:
- Mental Health Trained Occupational Therapist (psych education; coping skills, behavioural activation, etc.)
- Registered Clinical Counsellor or Psychotherapist
The nature of the treatment and type of professional recommended will depend upon the intensity and severity of your symptoms.
If you’re suffering from pain after your car accident — such as headaches, neck or back pain, nerve pain, muscle spasms — and you’re looking for alternatives to medication, acupuncture and IMS may be right for you.
Acupuncture treatment involves the use of extremely thin sterile needles to reduce or relieve pain. The needles are inserted into specific points on the body that have been shown to correspond with specific points in your body’s nervous system. The stimulation of these nervous system points can result in pain relief, general relaxation and restoration of the nervous system’s normal state.
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS), also known as functional dry needling, is a therapeutic procedure which involves the advancement of a thin needle into a dysfunctional muscle in the body that is identified to be the cause of pain or movement limitation. It is an evidence-based treatment that has been demonstrated to be highly effective for many conditions at all stages of recovery.
Some of our locations also offer experienced chiropractors that deliver hands-on treatment to help with aches, pains, repetitive strains, or other neck and back injuries.
They will provide manual adjustments, therapeutic exercises, and a personalized treatment plan to improve posture and flexibility, correct gait, and enhance movement.
If you're looking for a way to reduce stress, muscle tension or relieve pain from injuries sustained in your car accident, our registered massage therapists can help you (offered in some locations).
Massage therapy involves the manipulation of soft tissues in the body to improve the function of muscles and joints, enhance the circulation of blood and lymphatic systems, improve range of motion and help relieve pain. Treatment can always be modified or adjusted at any time based on your comfort level and health goals.
