Dr. Friars received his M.D. from Queen’s University in 1984 and in 1986, after a Family Medicine residency, he completed his CCFP. Since 1986, Dr. Friars has been in full-time practice which spans the clinical range from Family Medicine with a special interest in Orthopedics to Sports Medicine and Occupational Health.
Since 1994, Dr. Friars has performed numerous Independent Medical Evaluations and DAC assessments for motor vehicle accident victims. It has been through this experience he has been fortunate to have gained extensive experience in addressing physical disability questions and the rehabilitation methods needed for accident victims to return to their pre-accident condition.
Dr Friars acts in a consulting capacity in Occupational Medicine for many businesses in the Golden Triangle area. As Medical Director of Focus Assessments Inc., he has performed literally thousands of functional evaluations for both employers and the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board.
In 1996, Dr. Friars completed an Industrial Rehabilitation Professional Residency Program, studying the Matheson system of work capacity evaluation and functional testing. In 1998, he became the first physician certified in Ontario as a “Certified Work Capacity Evaluator”. Dr. Friars is also a member of the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators and has sat as member of the executive of the organization since 2001. In 2009, Dr. Friars became the President of the Canadian Society of Medical Evaluators.
